Thai Pub

There are two Thai food places here in Ljubljana and they are both similar in a lot of ways. To be honest as far as I can tell they both pretty much serve the same food the only difference is in the amount of food you get at each place.

Location: Rimska 13

Menu: Like Du Ba Du you get the same kind of menu with specific items available on a daily basis and a number of items available any time. The downside to this menu is that everything is in Slovenian, however that being said the waiter was really nice and translated everything for us.

Whats all included: you start off with a soup (I assume that it changes on a daily basis) and then you get your entree and a dessert.

What did I have: The soup was some kind of broth soup, I was not really sure what it was because I was never told. To be honest it was a little too fishy for my taste but my dinner mate states that they liked it. Then I had ordered the green curry bowl and it was delicious, nice and thick with coconut milk and it had a little kick (Just a little kick but it was the best that I have had hear so far so I can't complain). To drink each of us had a glass or wine, it was a nice Cab blend (and it only cost a euro) and dessert was two apples which seemed that they had seen better days. The server apologized about the apples and said that it was the only thing that they had.

Niceness of the restaurant: The restaurant was really nice, it had nice wooden floors and was not too loud. A nice place to go for a bit to eat and to just chat.

Over All: I would give this place a 3.75 stars out of 5. The food was pretty good but it was pretty standard nothing really stood out. I will most likely be back though if for nothing else for that curry as it was delicious.

Price: 3.51 (give or take)

Over all a good restaurant, and I certainly would recommend it if you are looking for a nice place to eat with a few friends other wise go to Du Ba Du.

Pizzeria Foculus

I heard that this was one of the best Pizzeria's in Ljubljana which is a bit of a big deal as Slovenians love their pizza.

Location: This is on Gregorciceva 3, which is on the side of Slovenska beside the river. You can't miss the pizzeria as it has a huge sign on the side of a building.

Menu: They have a huge menu with lots of different pizzas, also all the menus has "subtitles" in english (always a bonus). Plus you will find the servers very friendly and willing to answer your questions.

What do you get: You get a pretty good size pizza for the coupon price and you can get a drink for 1 euro (however we opted for a beer instead)

Fullness factor: It may be possible to finish the pizza and want more however if you have a average appetite (like myself) you will probably not desire any more.

Goodness Value: If you pizza then this is a great place to go. They have a perfectly done crust and good toppings, not too many but just right.

What did I have: I had the Lucifer pizza (which amounts to hot peppers and hot pepperoni). I would for sure have it again.

Overall: I would give this place a 4.5 stars out of 5, a for sure return to place.

Price: I can't remember exactly but I would guess about 3.41

All in all this is a great spot for a pizza I am not convinced that it is the best pizza place in Ljubljana but it is certainly up there.

Cantina Mexicana

This was a restaurant that was suggested by a gentleman who was selling food coupons as a good place to eat downtown.

Location: 4 Wolfova (this restaurant is a little difficult to find as it is down a kind of back ally)

Menu: The student menu is only in Slovenian however the normal menu has english "subtitles", there is a large number of items that can be ordered so that is a bonus.

What is included in the meal: You get a salad, a soup, a entree and a dessert

What I had: I went for a beef enchillada

Fullness Value: You get big portions of everything and when you are finished you certainly will be full and not wanting for anything else.

Goodness Value: The food here is pretty basic and not really that flavorful. I thought that the food was alright but I am planning on checking out the other mexican food restaurant before I make a decision of where or not I will be back.

Over All: I would give this restaurant a 2.75 stars out of 5 (the rating may be a little bit skewed because I was enjoying the company and the conversation so I was not really paying much attention to what I was eating)

Price: This is one of the more expensive coupons I think it is around 4 euros give or take.

The food here was alright but it is not something that I will be rushing back for, I have heard that one of the other Cantina Mexicana restaurants are better.

Da Bu Da

This is round two of Da Bu Da and I must say that it was a very pleasant surprised.

Location: Same as it was the first time I ate there.

Meal: This time I went with the curry and I must say this is the route to go if you are eating at Da Bu Da.

Price: I ended up paying full price as I didn't have a chance to get a student coupon (it was kind of last minute thing). Even paying full price this was a pretty cheap meal.

I will certainly be returning (this time with coupon). It was fantastic.

Fresco

When I first got coupons I asked the gentleman standing behind the counter for a coupon for a restaurant which was good and close to the center. One of the coupons that he gave me was for Fresco, and this has happened to me a few times so there has to be something to it.

Location: Right on Slovenska, beside the student international office.

Menu: the menu is in english which is always a bonus for non-slovenian speakers such as myself. There are a huge number of options with 4 daily specials that change on a regular basis.

What is all included in the meal: You start off with your option of soup (either the soup of the day or a beef noodle soup) and a salad (a regular mixed salad with a light dressing), then you get your entree and to finish off you get a little piece of dessert.

What did I have: Well I have been a couple of times the first time I had pasta with some kind of blue cheese on top (it was pretty good but you get a huge portion and by the time I was about half way though it was getting to be a little much) and the second time I had chicken breast with some kind of mushroom sauce (this was a daily special and was quite good)

Goodness value: the food here is pretty basis but that being said you get a good variety and the service is great (they bring out the food quick). If you are bored of pizza, mexican food, and thai this is a pretty good option.

Fullness value: You will leave full, not as stuffed as some other places but you certainly will not be looking for a snack a hour after you have eaten.

Value for your money: I would say that this is a pretty good coupon restaurant for what you pay for the coupon, it is not the cheapest but certainly not the most expensive either. Over all I would have to say it is pretty good.

Over all: I would give the restaurant 3.25 out of 5 stars. The food is nothing special but it is good and overall pretty healthy, I am sure that I will be back before I leave.

price: 3.41

Da Bu Da

This is one of the places that I had heard about from someone else, or else I can honestly say that I would have probably not chose to buy the coupon for this restaurant.

Location: right by the Maxi downtown, it is a really nice location and they have a great patio outside (weird side note no one here in Slovenia actually knows what a patio is they call them terraces). Also the restaurant is really nice inside it is very western in design (I know that the design of the inside of the restaurant is no indication on how good the food is but it doesn't hurt to have a nice design)

Menu: the menu was in english which is always a bonus. Also for the student menu there are about 7 or 8 dishes that you can have any day and then on specific days they have about 5 specific dishes. Besides the huge menu another nice thing is that you can eat at this restaurant any time and even on the weekends (after 5 and on the weekends you can order anything on the menu)

Whats all included in the meal: You get the standard salad (the salad bar was alright but missing lettuce), also you get a soup of the day (it was a strange milky soup with not much flavor on my visit) and dumplings (they were delicious), the entree and a dessert.

What did I have: for my entree I went with the Pad Thai (I am a huge fan of Thai), sadly the Pad Thai was pretty flavorless. You get lots of peanuts on top which is nice but you just don't get the spice level or the specific pad thai flavor. I would not recommend it.

Fullness factor: you will leave stuffed, I had this for lunch and I was still not hungry for dinner. You get a LOT of food.

Goodness Factor: I would give my meal a 2.5 stars out of 5. It was not terrible but I just have higher expectations for my thai food I guess. That being said I am not ready to give up on the place they had some really good sounding menu items so I will have to try it again at least once more (I have to try their curry)

Bang for your Buck: I would have to say that even though this is a little more costly as far as coupons go it is certainly not out of line and you do get a ton of food. I would have to say that you get a pretty good meal for what you pay.

Price: 3.91

Will certainly be back but will not be trying the pad thai again, they had their change. Also there are two thai restaurants for coupons in Ljubljana and I have heard that one is better for pad thai and one is better for curry but I couldn't remember which was which.

Aga Kabapci

There are a few of these kabob places around and I have frequented the location downtown a few times.

Location: There are various locations around the city

Menu: I am not sure what is all included with the student menu however I do know that I like their Kabobs and that is what is included with the coupon.

Whats all included with the coupon: You get a lemonade and a Kabob (your choice between beef, chicken or mixed)

What did I have: Generally I get the beef kabob however the last time I got brave and tried the mixed kabob and have decided that I will stick with the beef from now own.

Goodness Level: It is delicious, not something that you would want to eat everyday but certainly a once in a while treat.

Value for your money: Considering that these coupons are the cheapest I would say that you get great value for your money:

Over all: I would give the Kabob place a 3.5 stars out of 5

Price: .96

This is a great place to grab a quick bite to eat and I guarantee that when you finish you will be full and not need anything else

Falafel restaurant

I love Falafel and when I saw this restaurant I knew that it was on the have to try list. I got around to trying it today and I must say that this restaurant is certainly on my "go to again" list.

Location: 40 Trubarjeva

Menu: I am not sure because it is completely in Slovenian however the lady behind the counter was very helpful and spoke excellent english, there were a number of options for meals.

What is included in the meal: Black tea, some kind of falafel item, and dessert

What I had: The falafel sandwich

What I thought: It was delicious and a for sure try again location

Filling value: After finishing the meal I was full and satisfied

Value for the money: I give it a 4 1/2 stars out of 5

Cost: 1.91

For the cost this was a great restaurant and if you like Falafels this is the place to eat. This restaurant will for sure make it into my regular meal rotation, plus the fact that it is cheap and to a certain degree healthy is a huge bonus.

The restaurant is a little out of downtown but it is very worth while. There is a student menu however it is completely in Slovenian so if you don't speak Slovenian it is impossible to read however the lady who was working behind the counter (I think that the lady may be owner) was very helpful. It was suggested that I try the Falafel sandwich and I must say that it was very worthwhile. The meal comes with black tea, the falafel sandwich and a piece of dessert (it is very filling and delicious all at the same time).

I love coupons

When I first arrived in Ljubljana a little less then three weeks ago I had no idea what to expect or how things were done. As I have been here and been talking to people I have started to get a understanding for how things are done. One system that I am still mystified about is the coupon restaurants. It is not that I don't understand how the system works, actually I have a good understanding with how the system works, it is just that I have no idea what to expect when I buy coupons for a restaurant. It is always a surprise as I have no idea what kind of food each restaurant offers and how much food you will receive.

This is why I decided to start this blog, partly as a way for me to remember where I have enjoyed the food at a restaurant and partly to help others who stumble across this blog in helping them decide where to get coupons. If you are like me you hate wasting your hard earned euros on a restaurant where you have no idea what they are serving.

I will try to remember to post about each coupon restaurant that I eat as as well as the various coffee and wine bars that I will be visiting in my time here in Ljubljana so at the very minimum I will remember where I liked and where I didn't like.
